Best Thinset for Shower Walls and Floors

5 min readBy Sundry Pro Shop

What Makes a Thinset "Shower Grade"

Showers see constant water exposure, temperature swings, and shear forces from substrate movement. Standard dry-area thinset isn't engineered for it. For shower walls and floors, you want a thinset that's:

    •ANSI A118.4 or better (modified, polymer-fortified)
•Non-sagging for vertical walls (lets large tiles stay put without slipping)
•Compatible with your waterproofing — KERDI, HYDRO BAN, GoBoard, etc.

    Our Top Shower Thinsets

    Laticrete 254 Platinum

    •ANSI A118.15 — top tier.
•Bonds to virtually anything: KERDI, HYDRO BAN, cement board, glass tile, large format.
•Non-sag formula — perfect for shower walls.
•Lifetime warranty when paired with Laticrete waterproofing.
    •Our most-recommended shower thinset.

MAPEI Ultraflex LFT (Large Format Tile)

    •ANSI A118.4 / A118.11
•Specifically formulated for tiles 15" or larger.
•Non-sag, excellent for heavy stone and glass.
    •Pairs perfectly with Mapeguard waterproofing.

    Custom Building Products MegaLite

    •ANSI A118.4 modified.
•Lightweight (40-lb bag covers same area as 50 lb standard).
•Non-sag, great for KERDI shower installs.
•Excellent value for everyday shower jobs.

    Schluter ALL-SET

    •ANSI A118.15 modified.
•Engineered specifically for Schluter KERDI and DITRA systems.
•Required if you want the Schluter system warranty.

    What to AVOID in Showers

•Premixed mastic — never use in wet areas. It re-emulsifies with water.
•Unmodified thinset — fine for KERDI shower floors over membrane, but NOT for walls or porcelain over plywood.
•Cheap "all-purpose" thinset rated only A118.1 — not strong enough for wet shear loads.

    The Trowel + Thinset Match

Even the best thinset fails with the wrong trowel. For shower walls:

    •Mosaic / 4×4 wall tile: ¼" × ¼" square notch
    •Subway 3×6 or 4×8: ¼" × ⅜" square notch
    •12×24 wall tile: ½" × ½" square notch + back-butter
    •Large format 15"+: ¾" × ⅝" U-notch, always back-butter

Aim for 95% coverage on the back of every shower tile. Pull one up early in the install and check.
