Installing DITRA Over Plywood: A Step-by-Step Guide
Why DITRA Over Plywood
Wood expands and contracts with humidity. Tile does not. Bond them rigidly and something has to fail — usually the grout line or the tile itself. Schluter DITRA is an uncoupling membrane: a polyethylene layer with cut-back geometry on the top and a fleece on the bottom. The fleece bonds to the substrate; the top holds tile. In between, the geometry lets the substrate move independently of the tile above.
Result: tile that doesn't crack when the wood subfloor cycles through Montana winters and summers.
Before You Start — Substrate Requirements
DITRA is not a fix for a bad subfloor. It needs the following:
Materials You'll Need
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Prep the Plywood
Sweep the subfloor clean. Vacuum. Damp-mop and let it dry fully. Fasten any loose sheets, countersink proud fastener heads. Verify flatness with a 10 ft straightedge — grind high spots, fill dips with a portland-based self-leveling underlayment (not a gypsum-based product, which can degrade under DITRA).
2. Dry-Fit the DITRA
Roll out DITRA and cut sheets to fit. Run seams tight but do not overlap — DITRA butts edge-to-edge. Cut with a utility knife along a straightedge; the material cuts easily.
3. Mix the Modified Thinset
Follow the bag ratio exactly. Mix to a smooth, mayonnaise-like consistency. Let it slake 5–10 minutes, then remix. Do not add extra water to loose the mortar — it changes cure chemistry.
4. Trowel the Substrate
Using a ¼" × ¼" square-notch trowel, apply modified thinset to the plywood. Key it in with the flat side first, then comb straight lines with the notched side. Only cover as much area as you can lay DITRA on before the thinset skins over (typically 15–20 minutes in Montana climate).
5. Set the DITRA — Fleece Side Down
Lay the DITRA fleece side down onto the wet thinset. Press firmly with a grout float or a laminate roller, working from center outward to push out air. You should get 100% mortar transfer to the fleece — pull up a small edge to verify on your first sheet, then adjust technique if needed.
6. Butt the Seams
Seams butt tight but do not overlap. For wet areas (bathrooms, showers), cover seams with KERDI-BAND in unmodified thinset to waterproof the assembly.
7. Let It Cure Enough to Walk On
Wait until the thinset under DITRA is firm enough to walk on without shifting the membrane — typically 24 hours in normal conditions, less with rapid-set thinset. Do not tile immediately.
8. Set Tile Over DITRA — Unmodified Thinset
Use unmodified thinset (or Schluter ALL-SET if you want one bag for both layers). Trowel size matches tile size — ½" × ½" for 12"–24" tile, ¾" × ¾" for larger. Comb straight lines, back-butter any tile 13" or larger, check coverage on the first few tiles by pulling one up (95% coverage for wet areas, 85% for dry).
Common Mistakes
When to Waterproof
DITRA is water-management — not waterproof by itself. For showers, tub surrounds, or steam rooms, waterproof the seams with KERDI-BAND and treat drain penetrations per the Schluter installation manual. For dry-area residential floors, seam-banding is not required.
