5 Common LVP Installation Mistakes
Mistake #1: Skipping Moisture Testing
LVP is waterproof on top, but moisture migrating up through concrete will destroy the installation from underneath. Adhesive fails, planks cup, and mold grows.
The Fix: Always test concrete slabs with a calcium chloride test or in-situ relative humidity probe. Most LVP manufacturers require ≤5 lbs/1000 sq ft/24 hrs (calcium chloride) or ≤80% RH. If you're over, use a moisture mitigation system like Wakol PU 280 before you lay a single plank.
Mistake #2: Not Acclimating the Product
LVP needs to adjust to the room's temperature. Cold planks are stiff and won't click together properly. Hot planks are too flexible.
The Fix: Store planks in the installation space at 65–85°F for at least 48 hours before starting. Keep the HVAC running at normal occupancy levels.
Mistake #3: Ignoring Subfloor Flatness
LVP is thin and flexible — it telegraphs every bump, dip, and crack in the subfloor. A ¼" dip over 6 feet creates visible deflection and clicking noise.
The Fix: Check flatness with a 6-foot straightedge. Grind down high spots and fill low spots with a self-leveler like Uzin NC 150 or a patching compound like Uzin #888 Extreme Patch. The standard is 3/16" in 10 feet.
Mistake #4: Forgetting Expansion Gaps
LVP expands and contracts with temperature changes. Without gaps at walls, transitions, and fixed objects, the floor buckles.
The Fix: Leave a ¼" gap at all walls, cabinets, islands, and door frames. Use spacers — don't eyeball it. And never pin the floor with molding nails driven through the plank.
Mistake #5: Wrong Transition Strips
Using the wrong transition between LVP and adjacent flooring causes tripping hazards and looks unprofessional.
The Fix: Use an LVP transition strip designed for the height difference. The catalog includes T-moldings, reducers, and end caps. Bring your plank sample to the Pro Desk and ask about a compatible profile.
