LVP & SPC Tool Checklist: Rigid-Core and Vinyl Plank Installs

The tool list for rigid-core SPC, WPC, and flexible vinyl plank installs, plus what the manufacturer decides.

Frequently asked questions

  • What tools do I need for an SPC rigid-core floor? — Tape, chalk line, straightedge, square, a score-and-snap vinyl cutter for straight cuts, a fine-tooth saw or jigsaw for end cuts and curves, an undercut saw for casings, spacers sized to the manufacturer's expansion gap, and only the tapping or pull tools that product's instructions permit. Glue-down work adds the specified trowel and roller.
  • Can I use the same tapping block on any locking system? — No. Locking profiles differ, and many are designed to be angled and dropped rather than tapped. Use the block the manufacturer names, or none — the wrong block can damage the joint and void warranty coverage even when the floor looks fine on install day.
  • How flat does the substrate need to be for rigid core? — Use the flatness tolerance printed in that flooring manufacturer's current installation instructions. Rigid core bridges small defects better than flexible LVP, but long dips still cause hollow spots, clicking, and joint stress.
  • Do waterproof planks mean I can skip moisture testing? — No. The plank may be waterproof, but the slab still emits moisture that attacks adhesives and traps humidity under floating floors. A handheld meter screens for suspect areas; the accepted test method required by the manufacturer is what governs whether you install.
